Weak-side shape on a ball screen

On a ball screen, the weak side lifts, drifts or sets a hi-lo pair so help defenders have too many people to cover. A defender helping on the roll leaves a lift or a low-block player open.

Step through it

The cue: “Clear the side, then fill.” Only the defender who gives the read is drawn.

Read the three steps as text
  1. 1 has the ball on the right with 5 coming to screen. On the weak side, 2 is on the left wing and 4 and 3 stand as a hi-lo pair, with X2 guarding 2.
  2. 1 uses the screen and 5 rolls. X2 sags into the paint to help on the roll.
  3. 2 lifts to the open spot X2 left, and 1 skips the ball across to 2. The cue: Clear the side, then fill.

Ask, don't tell

After the rep, ask one question: “Who left you to help on the roll?” Judge the decision, not whether the shot went in.

Why it is in this library

Every read here passes the same tests: it is a read, not a reaction; it has few moving parts; it fits five-out spacing; it transfers as a concept; and it falls back into normal play if the read is not there. Teach the roles (screener, cutter, passer), not the positions.

Unofficial fan-created resource. The read is distilled from published coaching playbooks, curated and reviewed by Ravi Sundram, and the diagram is a schematic drawn for this site. Not affiliated with any team, coach or league.
