Ball screen + replace

The screener rolls to the rim. A teammate fills the spot he left so spacing resets and the handler keeps an outlet. The roll pulls the lowest defender into the paint. The replace gives the handler a safe, spaced pass.

Step through it

The cue: “Roll, and someone fills behind you.” Only the defender who gives the read is drawn.

Read the three steps as text
  1. 1 has the ball at the top and 4 comes to set a ball screen. 2 is on the left wing, 3 on the right wing, and 5 in the right corner.
  2. 1 uses the screen and 4 rolls to the rim. The roll pulls X5, the lowest defender, into the paint.
  3. 2 fills the spot the screener left, and 1 passes back to the open, spaced outlet. The cue: Roll, and someone fills behind you.

Ask, don't tell

After the rep, ask one question: “Who is your safe outlet if the roll is covered?” Judge the decision, not whether the shot went in.

Why it is in this library

Every read here passes the same tests: it is a read, not a reaction; it has few moving parts; it fits five-out spacing; it transfers as a concept; and it falls back into normal play if the read is not there. Teach the roles (screener, cutter, passer), not the positions.

Unofficial fan-created resource. The read is distilled from published coaching playbooks, curated and reviewed by Ravi Sundram, and the diagram is a schematic drawn for this site. Not affiliated with any team, coach or league.
