Pass-triggered fill

4-out-1-in. When a slot passes to a wing, the passer cuts through to the weak side. The opposite slot fills the spot he left. The weak wing fills up to that slot. Slot-to-slot pass: swap with the wing below. A pass changes who is open. The passer leaves, two teammates fill, and the floor re-balances with no one standing still. If the post is empty, the cutter can face-cut to it.

Step through it

The cue: “Pass, then go somewhere useful, and someone fills your spot.” Only the defender who gives the read is drawn.

Read the three steps as text
  1. Four out, one in: 1 and 2 are the slots at the top, 3 and 4 are the wings and 5 is in the post. 1 has the ball and X1 guards him.
  2. 1 passes to the wing, 3. X1 turns to watch the ball.
  3. 1 cuts through to the weak side. 2 fills the spot 1 left and 4 lifts to fill the slot 2 left. The cue: Pass, then go somewhere useful, and someone fills your spot.

Ask, don't tell

After the rep, ask one question: “Who's open when I pass it out here, and who has to move to fill that?” Judge the decision, not whether the shot went in.

Why it is in this library

Every read here passes the same tests: it is a read, not a reaction; it has few moving parts; it fits five-out spacing; it transfers as a concept; and it falls back into normal play if the read is not there. Teach the roles (screener, cutter, passer), not the positions.

Unofficial fan-created resource. The read is distilled from published coaching playbooks, curated and reviewed by Ravi Sundram, and the diagram is a schematic drawn for this site. Not affiliated with any team, coach or league.
