DHO Reads: Take It or Keep It

A dribble handoff is one read shared by two players, and the read belongs to the defender’s feet, not to a call from the bench. Step through the handoff below, then through the two things the receiver’s defender can do and the one answer each leaves open. It is realistic from under-12 in a small group.

The dribble handoff: trail or jump

1 dribbles at 2 and hands the ball off at the slot. 2’s defender, X2, has two ways to guard it, and each one leaves a different option open. Step through both.

Read the four steps as text
  1. 1 has the ball at the top and 2 is on the left wing, guarded by X2. A dribble handoff is one read shared by two players, and the read starts with the defender on the receiver, so X2 is the only defender drawn. Handoffs happen at the slot, not in the corner, so there is room to turn the corner afterwards.
  2. 1 dribbles at 2 and presents the ball at the slot. 2 comes off the wing and lands the inside foot first, ready to take it tight to 1’s hip. Both players now read X2’s feet. The read comes from what they see, not from a call from the bench.
  3. X2 goes over the top of the handoff and ends up behind 2. 2 takes the ball and turns the corner downhill, tight to 1’s hip, with the defender trailing.
  4. Same handoff, different defender. X2 jumps 2’s path and ends up in front of 2, so there is no corner to turn. 1 keeps the ball and attacks the space X2 just left. One read, two answers: the defender’s choice decides who has the ball.

At junior level

The handoff is the one off-ball screening action the Off-Ball Screening guide says is realistic from under-12, in a small group, because its simplest form is a single read shared by two players. Keep the rest of the handoff menu — shooting off it, re-screens, coverage calls — for under-16.

The DHO Reads session plan builds it in steps: the handoff footwork with no defender, then the trail-or-jump read with the coach secretly telling the defender what to do, then 2v2 live, then 3v3 with a corner defender to read as well.
